PROGRAM

FRIDAY

10.00-16.00: Scientific Forum: “Open Psych-Mic”

Arken

Venue: Arken, Tehtaankatu 2 (the main entrance is across the yard through the glass doors)

The program during the first day is made up of what you bring to the table: the idea is that we organize suitable rooms and equipment, and give you the opportunity to share your psychology related thoughts and experiences with your fellow students. Your own imagination sets the limits for what kind of activities are organized, it can be anything from discussion groups about CBT or the treatment of addictions, to workshops on mindfulness or on professional ethics, to presentations of your bachelor/masters thesis, to poster and paper presentations, to film sessions, to psychodrama, to brainstorming about future co-operation between psychology students in the Nordic countries, to..?
This is a great way of gaining conference experience in a relaxed, low pressure environment, that we really hope that as many of you will grab! This is how the program looks so far, there might still be some changes:

There will be four workshops running simultaneously, from which you will be able to choose the one that you are the most interested of. The workshop speakers are:

Matti Sorsa, M.Phil (Psychologist); Human Performance Specialist, Aviation, Maritime, NPP: He graduated in 1981 (Applied Psychology, Helsinki University). Since then he has worked in Selection, Training and Safety Investigation in the fields where human action and high level of technology meet in a high-risk environment. He operates as a free consultant runnning his
own company.

Pauliina Tuomivaara, M.A. (Psych), specialised in family counseling, Riding Therapist (ratsastusterapeutti SRT): Pauliinas presentation will cover the following topics: Riding Therapy as mental rehabilitation, what it is. Who it is for – clients in riding therapy. Who pays for it – the funding of riding therapy in Finland. How to become a riding therapist in Finland.

Petri Koistinen, D.Sc (Econ.), M.A. (Psych.), works as a Human Factors and Safety Culture Specialist at Olkiluoto NPP: Graduated from Tampere University in 1996 (Psychologist) and from Lappeenranta University of Technology in 2003 (PhD in Economics and Business Administration). Since June 2004 he has been working as an organinizational psychologist in Olkiluoto NPP (nuclear power plant). Main topics at work are: organizational learning, safety culture and also general issues like organizational development and job satisfaction. Presentation will cover those themes and also how M.A. in psychology will ‘help to cope’ in industry.

Antti Revonsuo Ph.D. (psychology): BRAIN, CONSCIOUSNESS, HAPPINESS: How 21st Century Psychology Became Everything That 20th Century Psychology Rejected. In the 1990’s, psychological science changed in ways that are nothing short of revolutionary. During my Master’s studies in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, no such fields as Cognitive Neuroscience, Evolutionary Psychology, Consciousness Research, or Positive Psychology existed. Consequently, I felt that my studies did not tell me much about the things I was really interested in, such as the mind-brain problem, consciousness, dreaming, biological evolution of mind, happiness and positive emotions. Fortunately, it turned out that all of these topics were just about to make a rapid and forceful entry to psychological science. Thus, my entire career in research and teaching has in fact been on topics that I never studied one bit! In my workshop I will (1) tell about my research and teaching on consciousness, dreaming, happiness, etc. (2) talk about the academic career path and, based on my own experience, would encourage other people to follow their dreams and favourite topics if they aim at becoming successful researchers, (3) talk about the importance of opening new pathways and going your own way beyond what you were taught during your studies, because it is certain that psychological science will keep changing, and the psychology you study now will not necessarily be the psychology you will work on 10 or 20 years from now.

Lasse Nurmi M.A. (Psych.) I graduated from the University of Turku in 1978. My first appointment as a psychologist was at the Military Psychology Office of the Finnish Defence Forces. Later I was there a chief psychologist having a responsibility for the selection of  military personnel (psychological testing procedures). Since 1986 I have been working for the police, first as a senior lecturer at the Police College of Finland and since 2006 as a police psychologist at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Crime Investigation: Homicide and Other Serious Crime section. My work at the police has included training, consulting in hostage negotiation, criminal investigation, disaster victim identification and family liaison officer work. I’ve conducted also tens of critical incident debriefings for the police and other people.

Merja Tuomola Master of Social Sciences, (sport) psychologist, supervisor, works as private entrepreneur doing among other things solution-focused hypnotherapy and psychological coaching.

17ish-19ish Seminar Sauna

Venue: Kåren, address: Hämeenkatu 22. The entrance to the sauna is a few meters past the main entrance to Kåren, towards the town center and away from Arken.

After the seminar we’ve reserved the sauna at Åbo Akademis Student Union which is called Kåren. The sauna fits about 20 people at a time, but there’s more space in the dressing room for chilling & beerdrinking :) As there’s only one sauna and one shower room the men and women bathe together, so it can be a good idea to bring a swimsuit or extra towel that you can use in the sauna. Remember to bring your own beer/drink of choice!

20ish -> Seminar party

Venue: Dynamo, a slightly alternative night club, which is in an old wooden house in the center of Turku. The address is Linnankatu 7.

The party is almost as big a part of the SPOL seminar as the scientific program, and as the seminar this year is going to be bigger and more international it’s guaranteed to be a lot of fun! The music will be provided by DJ Pink Freud and MBoost, and during happy hour (up until 23.00) a beer costs 2,80. Tickets to the party will be sold at Arken earlier the same day, during the breaks in the scientific program for a couple of euros.

SUNDAY

11.00-18.00 Miniexcursions
During the day there will be several shorter excursions in and around Turku. The idea with the excursions is to offer you a relaxed way to spend more time with your new friends and get to know the city your staying in a bit better at the same time. You can sign up for the excursions in Arken during the breaks in the seminar program on Saturday.

11.00-14.00 Sledding at Observatorieberget

11.00-14.00 Group walk around the city to see some popular sights

15.00-18.00 Winter outdoor swimming (see www.turunavantouimarit.fi for more info)

14.15-18.00: Nordic Psychology Student Meeting

Venue: Arken, Tehtaankatu 2 (the main entrance is across the yard through the glass doors)

During the meeting future forms for co-operation between the student organizations in the Nordic countries will be discussed, two representatives/country will be chosen for the next “term”, and the venue for the next Nordic Psychology Student Meeting will be chosen. Everyone who is interested in the subject is more than welcome to join the discussion, but the meeting is not compulsory.
